2nd Sissay PHD Scholarship announced
I’ve been Doctor Lemn Sissay since 2009 awarded from University of Huddersfield by Chancellor Patrick Stewart. The Vice Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan grew up on a council estate which he can see on the hills from his rooftop office. Wonderful. In the foreground is the architecture of the future reflecting and respecting its forebears. This Business Centre (below) was built by artisans of Huddersfield using locally sourced materials. The University of Huddersfield excels in enterprise and innovation and was awarded in 2012 the Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year Award. This was followed in 2013 with recognition through the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. The university of Huddersfield is one of only five universities whose patron is a member of The Royal Famiy – the Duke of York. It's humanities department is striking out for young people in care. In 2009 Chancellor Bob Cryan announced The Sissay Scholarship. Today I met the first PHD Sissay sholarship recipient Belinda Bluff. Her PHD is now coming to an end . Some of her findings have already been published. In less than ten months she will be awarded her doctorate but the care attention and rigor given by the supervising team is world class.Today the Vice Chancellor announced the second PHD Sissay Scholarship for a care leaver at University of Huddersfield. He also announced that Let There Be Peace will be installed upon the wall of the newest 21st century wing – the leisure and learning centre. University of Huddersfield is serious business. I am unstoppably proud. The poem will be installed around the world too but the PHD students will change the world.
